The word entertainment derives from the Medieval Latin intertenere, a compound of the prefix inter meaning ‘inside’ and the suffix tenere, which means to hold. The same root is also found in the French entretenir and the Latin intestine, which reflects the fact that entertainment has long been considered a healthy form of recreation.
